BROWNIES BEAT BEDE’S IN BRUISING BATTLE

It wasn’t the prettiest performance of the season, but it was pretty effective, nonetheless. Old Xaverians toppled the Tigers to secure a place in the four and, at the same time, jumped into second spot.

The Red ‘n’ Blacks established their superiority early, driving forward relentlessly in the first term. The Seasiders defended with vigour and skill, but could not mount any serious attacks of their own.  Scrappy and crowded it was, but Annabel Nichols managed three goals and Jen Barker one, and that was enough to seal the deal.

Tarryn Meyer was in everything, while two Amys - Benifer and Livingstone - hit in hard and proved very effective. Georgie Wilson continued her fine form, while Ebony Dwyer provided plenty of dash.

Team Manager Jacs Shields reports:

A win by the Brownies against 7th placed St Bede’s was predicted in this week’s  Lugar but there were no chickens being counted as they took to the field on Sunday. All the action was to be in our forward fifty for the first term with an almighty score a possibility were it not for inaccurate kicking resulting in six behinds with one agonising poster. Annabel Nichols was in fine form as the team keep pushing the ball forward booting two goals seeing the opposition with no runs on the board on the siren.

Bruce Wilson, Scoreboard Operator and Team Manager for the U23s, was kept busier in the second quarter fetching the family dog from the ground than updating the board. St Bede’s turned up the pressure with impressive tackling and an arm wrestle ensuing resulting in no additional points for either team.

Great positioning by Annabel Nichols saw her third goal for the day in the third quarter. The opposition’s defensive wall was excellent with great pressure applied. One hour of game time and the visitors were still yet to put a point on the board trailing 3.9.27 into the final term.

The visitors continued to effectively repel the ball in the final term in increasingly blustery conditions. It was a sensational team goal from the back which was to see Jen Barker convert putting the fourth goal of the day on the scoreboard for the win. A fitting end to what was an emotional day for Jen, commemorating the loss of her first child Hayden Daniel at 10 weeks of age 15 years ago today. Gabby Golds graciously stepped aside as captain in Jen’s stead with her teammates wearing black arms bands in support of Jen and her husband Dylan, WOX Assistant Coach.

FRANTASTICS FINISH IT QUICKLY

The Frantastics took first place after smashing SBMT by 94 points at Xavier College.

The Xavs held the visitors scoreless and only inaccuracy prevented them from kicking a record score. To the Tigers’ credit, they played short-handed, but never gave up, and the game was played in a competitive but fair spirit.

New skipper Rachel Cox booted three goals, as did Gabby Cleaver and Sarah Gucciardo, while Katta Mullins and Brooke Robertson, down from the Brownies, were in everything.
