RETURN OF THE WOX

Lucia La Rosa gives a rundown

April 18, 2024

Exciting news from the WOX program!

Season 2024 is shaping up to be fantastic with the return of two teams and an impressive turnout for pre-season training. A whopping 70 players, including 38 newcomers, have joined the ranks, thanks in part to our players' efforts in recruiting friends and family to embrace footy at Old Xavs.

It's not just about our homegrown talent; we've welcomed a spirited influx of young women from Genazzano, as well as contingents from Melbourne Girls College, Ruyton, MLC, Sacre Coeur, and beyond. The energy at Xavier College during our pre-season sessions was electrifying, and we're gearing up for a dynamic season ahead.

With WOX1 spending another season in Women's Division 1 and WOX2 set to compete in Women's Division 4, the anticipation is high. Our intra-club hit-out at Genazzano and practice match against Old Camberwell showcased our readiness. Coaches are singing praises, noting improvements in handball execution, play transitioning, and forward line delivery.

Our leaders for the 2024 season have been confirmed, with Cristina Sgarbossa (80 Games) set to lead the WOX for the second year. Tahryn Mant (45 Games) and Chloe Psyhogios (56 Games) will step into the Vice Captains role, with Hannah Ryan (35 Games) and Eliza Forrest (52 Games) rounding out the leadership group. Millie Ventura (48 Games) will be leading our reserves side as captain.

The weekend just passed marked the debut of 23 players, with more to follow in the weeks ahead. As the season progresses, keep an eye out for standout talents like Allie Libertine, Chiara Chiarelli, Jess Slupecki, and Lucy Lentini as they make their mark in the red and black. Their arrival injects fresh talent and enthusiasm into our squad, and we can't wait to see them shine on the field.
