Round Six Wrap

May 17, 2025

Things turned in Round 6 - the weather for sure, and for some teams, the pickings were thin.

ALL WET

The momentum of recent weeks was washed away by the rain and a marauding Old Brighton team who came to spoil another Xaverian party. With rain from the outset, most would have believed the conditions would have suited the Red ’n’ Blacks better.  Whatever, it was the Tonners who began better, though by quarter-time, Xavs had cranked up the engine and looked to be handling things well.

Er, …no. The second term was all Brighton. By half-time, the Beach Boys were up by 22, but there was still the chance of a comeback. Again,no! The visitors could have put their cue in the rack and refused to score again, because Xavs never even shaded Brighton’s half-time score. Of course, the Tonners had other ideas. They scored eight goals to two after the long break, and won by plenty.

The visitors went home not only with the points, but a two-game lead at the top of the table. They also carry with them an outstanding record at Toorak Park, where they have won their last four. Nobody does that to the Old Xaverians, but the Tonners have.

It’s a dog-fight for the teams below the Tonners. Xavs are still second, but only on percentage. Next week, Blues will be trying to win the Carmody Cup for the first time. Frankly, the X-Men will need to be a lot better than they were today to retain it.

BEST: Thomas Dunne, Campbell Lane, Wade Brusnahan, Alex Trigar, Charlie Westcott, Marcus Stavrou

GOALS: Wade Brusnahan 2, Xavier Austin 1, Charles Holmes 1, Campbell Lane 1, Denis Symeopoulos 1, Dan Tuddenham 1, Charlie Westcott 1

Collegians (51) pushed St Kevin’s (58) but a two to one goalfinal term earned the Tricolours the points at the Trott.  At Parkville, Uni Blues (52) led at everychange, but could manage just six behinds in the final term to fall to thefaster-finishing Haileybury by 20 points. De Salle (49) chased St Bernard’s(81) all day but never caught them. Similarly, Old Scotch (57) came home like agreyhound but couldn’t catch the fast--starting bunny Uni Blacks (62). WithXavs being torched at Toorak Park, every home team lost in Round 6.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT SCALP

Old Brighton came to Toorak Park with some aspirations but were hammered by the reigning premier by 62 points. The Red ‘n’Blacks turned it on from the beginning and kept the pressure on the visitors.

WOX DRAW IT

The WOX held on for a draw afrter leading at every change. It was a tight affair all day at Toorak Park, despite the Red 'n' Blacks leading by a couple of goals after a great opening term. They maintained the gap until the third term, when their inability to score allowed the Seasiders a chance to win it. They didn't, but neither did the home team.

GOALS: Sienna McLeish 2, Chiara Chiarelli 1, AnabelleGangi 1, Kasey Jobling 1, Amelie Menegola 1 , Bella Villani 1

RED 'n' BLACKS DOWN AGAIN

In a low scoring affair, Xavs led at every change, but failed to fire sufficiently in the final term to maintain their narrow lead. Caulfield did better by a goal, and that was sufficient for the Fieldsmen to get the points.

SCORES

BEST: Ted Hansen, Francis Bailey, Adam Rizzo, Tommy Trist, Gerard Forrest, Alby Hewitt

GOALS: Gerard Forrest 3, Max King 2, Alby Hewitt 1, Lachlan Mallett 1

U2s ROLLED

The Bears had a very solid win over the U19 Twos because of their superiority before the long break. After the half, the Red 'n' Blacks were far more competitive than they had been early, but the deficit was too large to rein in.

BEST: Cooper McLean,Patrick Kenny, George Pick, Lachie Dring, Jeremy Dalton, Ethan Brown

ONE GOAL IN MIND

The Menages went down to heavy defeat at the hands of SKOB. The Kevins were far too good for the Red 'n' Blacks, holding them to just one goal, scored by captain-coach Will Honan. If he had goal in mind for the afternoon, it wasn't this. The Menages are second on the ladder.

SCORES

BEST: Blair Mantesso, Edison Ponari, Scott Gordon, Nick Nunan, KieranEllis, Rory Calvert

GOAL: Will Honan 1

DE LA TOO STRONG

Charlie Hummerston was BOG but the Bellers proved too good for the Red 'n' Blacks. The result means the Xavs drop to fifth place on the ladder.

T-BIRDS TRIUMPH AGAIN

Another big win for Red 'n' Blacks, who shut down the spicy football for which the home team is renowned. Big second and fourth quarters from the Xavs enabled the easy win. James McCarthy dobbed five and was best, with Eddie Paul landing four and Aaron Ivak three.
