VALE SIMON MASSEY

VALE SIMON MASSEY

February 27, 2023

It is with sadness that the club has learned of the passing of Simon Massey, who served as the club's timekeeper in 2019.

Simon attended Kostka Hall between 1966 and 1971 and Xavier College in the five years following. Growing up in Beaumaris, the family were deeply involved with the Beaumaris Football Club and it was with them that he played his football.

He subsequently held various volunteer roles with the Sharks, serving as timekeeper for over thirty years He was awarded Life Membership of Beaumaris in 1991.

After a change in administration at Beauy, Simon elected to take free agency and at Elsternwick on Opening Day in 2019, he agreed to man the clock for the Red 'n' Blacks Senior and Reserve Teams.

He proved a professional and dedicated man with the stopwatch on Saturdays, and attended training on Thursday nights. Those who engaged with him were left in no doubt that he had a keen football brain and had a real passion for amateur football and his new club.

The COVID-cancelled season in 2020 deprived Simon of one of his great enjoyments. His health, poor for some time, deteriorated further and it was obvious to most that he would have severe difficulties returning to the timekeeper's box. Still, Simon remained determined always to make a contribution and looked forward to the new Toorak Park and access to an elevator.

He will be missed. We pray for Simon and wish that the next life is kinder to him than this one was.
