It is with sorrow that we learn of the passing yesterday of Allan McLean, a former secretary and treasurer of the Old Xaverians Football Club and a long-time financial member.

Allan was a great grandson of the 19th Premier of Victoria of the same name, an emigre from Scotland in mid 1850s.

He was a third generation Xaverian (Class of '52), and the family's red and black line now stretches to five generations through his son Stuart (XC '84) and his grandsons Archie and Hector, who are present day students.

Allan was the father of Matthew Naughton (XC '76), Stuart McLean (XC '84) and Ian McLean (XC '86) and the uncle of former OXFC committeeman Nick Martin.

Allan (XC '52) was in his early eighties, and was a regular at Toorak Park over many seasons. While at school, he played in the First XVIII and captained the XI in his final two seasons at XC.

Allan helped out Anthony McDonald with employment back in the mid 90s, encouraging him to play for the Red 'n' Blacks. That first connection proved very fruitful for our club, with the arrival in later years of James, Alex and Phil McDonald, Travis Ruyg, Tim Clarke, Nick Bye and Mike Beardsley.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the McLean family.

Ave atque vale: hail and farewell, Allan.

The Funeral Mass for the late Mr Allan D McLean will be offered at Xavier College Chapel, Barkers Road, Kew on FRIDAY (June 2nd, 2017) commencing at 11.15 am. A Private Cremation will follow.
