The Sheik's Superside: Halfway Mark 2010
He has been missing for a long time, but now he is back and he has decided that he won't just name his top 30 VAFA players, but he'd put them into a team.
Surely there will be some who disagree with the top 30 and the team, so let us know who the great man has missed, and who would be better in a certain position - admin@oldxavs.com.au
Just to ruffle even more feathers our towel headed friend has chosen to name his top 10!
1. Jack Watts (UNI): In this scribes opinion, Watts is a stand out as the best player in the Premier Section of the VAFA so far in 2010. His athleticism in the ruck is unparalleled, as is his around the ground work. It seems that every week, Watts has a major influence on the game, and is a real barometer as to how Uni is playing in general.
2. Nick Ries (COL): The former Hawk continues to be that hard inside player who constantly collects possessions at will, as well as kick valuable goals for the Lions. Without doubt he is the premier midfielder of the competition, and has proven that time and time again so far in 2010.
3. Andrew Biddlecombe (XAV): A welcome return to the Old Xavs backline after spending the last six years at Sandringham. His ability to read the play and repel forward attacks has been outstanding this year. He has been given some huge jobs in 2010, and has beaten his opponent on each occasion.
4. David Lowe (DLS): The De La skipper has continued his hot form this year after winning last year’s Woodrow Medal. A real leader that loves the big games and always performs.
5. Nick Wynne (XAV): The Old Xavs Best and Fairest in 2009 in his debut year has started 2010 where he left off. His form to date has been fantastic, and has even seen him depart his beloved goal square down back and move up the ground be it across half forward, or on the wing. A genuine utility player, who the Xavs will be looking for a big second half of the season.
6. Sam Williams (DLS): The zippy winger has stamped himself on the competition with his electrifying pace and ability to win the ball this year. Despite drawing a tag most weeks, he has had a great year so far and is a real key to last year's runners-up chances in 2010. Might even be a smoky to get drafted.
7. Robert Ferraro (SCO): Well renowned footballer from the Ovens and Murray League who was arguably one of the biggest signings in the Amateur in 2010. His hard, tenacious in-and-under style has been fantastic for Old Scotch this year, and he is one of the better midfielders in the competition.
8. Paul Wintle (SBM): Mr versatile can play anywhere on the ground and always has an influence on the game.
9. Andrew Ramsden (TRI): Old Father Time. When I heard Rambo would be playing on in 2010, I had a genuine chuckle to myself and felt the game was well past him. However, as he has done in the past, he has proven me wrong and started the season in amazing fashion. While he may not be the dominant A-Grade ruckman he once was, he has transformed himself into a genuine target up forward, and at the half way mark of the season, is leading the goal kicking.
10. Matthew Handley (XAV): Chopper has been the premier power forward of the competition for the last few seasons, and without question he remains so in 2010. While he hasn't hit his best as yet after a limited pre-season, he has still been a valuable contributor week in and week out...and I have no doubt he will deliver in the second half of the year. Every week he draws two or more players, yet still manages to have a real influence up forward for the Xavs.
