The old Xavs travelled to Scammell Reserve in week 2 of the finals series, looking to utilise the double chance. Standing in their way of going into the grand final was an upbeat and confident Beaumaris side.

After getting off to such a poor start the week before the sole focus was to start well and be lower and harder than the opposition. The midfield started by giving the forwards plenty of entry’s early on. We didn’t convert our opportunities early, kicking four behinds before converting our first goal. The forwards were looking extremely dangerous with Iacuone kicking two goals and Lewis providing plenty of x-factor and class during the first stanza. It was pleasing to go into quarter time with a 4 goal lead but also leaking 4 goals quite easy was a little concerning.

The message from the coach at quarter time was to continue there hardness at the ball and to look to shut them down and not get into a shoot out with them. Pasceri and Storey continued there good form in the middle of the ground while Bergin continued to work as hard as ever and was rewarded by kicking his second goal. Beaumaris never allowed us to get too far ahead by responding everytime they had to. Although Franklyn and Ryan remained steady when the ball came inside forward 45 rebounding many entry’s the opposition had. With a five goal quarter from both sides it looked inevitable  that were involved in a shoot out. A 26 point lead at the main break was a brilliant base but the job needed to be finished.

The third quarter was a real grind but Beaumaris got a little bit of ascendancy and a run on. They strung consecutive goals together and it required some cool heads to come to the fall. It was vice captain, Harangozo, once again putting his head over the ball and winning himself a free kick and kicking a crucial goal. With only a 9 point lead at the final break Beauy were full of confidence after there previous game against us where they ran over the top of us.

They kicked the first goal of the last and got within three points but that was there last effort. From there the Xavs kicked 9 goals and ended up winning by 41 points.

Next week is a big day for us hopefully being able to knock of De La at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday. Look forward to seeing a big crowd there.
