RUE EARLY MISSES
Two rivals again locked horns at Camberwell Sports ground but unfortunately it was the Cardinals who got the better of an Old Xavs side with plenty to play for.
With a big breeze favouring one end of the ground, it was the 1st quarter which proved to be the difference as the Red & Black missed opportunity after opportunity. Kicking with the wind, the Xavs scored 3.9 in the first quarter and it seemed this inaccuracy could always potentially come back to haunt us. Nick Biddlecombe started well and again showed that he is one of the in form forwards in the competition.
The 2nd quarter was again a very good performance with the Red n Black looking the better of the two teams but again when it counted could not convert in front of goal. Scotch on the other hand with minimal impact on the game, kicked straight and applied severe scoreboard pressure. Sam Lees coming back from injury was good in the early stages and will be better for the run. Dan Harangozo and Dan Curtain were also damaging out of the middle.
The second half was a completely different game as Scotch stepped up a gear and unfortunately kicked away. For the 3rd quarter in a row they were more accurate in front of the big sticks and we couldn’t make the most of having a breeze.
The last quarter started with Scotch getting a quick free kick and goal from the centre square. They then kicked another two in succession which all but sealed the game for them. Whilst the Xavs were extremely good in the first half, we didn’t take our chances and a good side will never lie down.
The Under 19’s now face a big test travelling to Beaumaris who sit 3rd on the ladder. A win will cement a spot in the 4 with our fate still being in our own hands.
