SUFFER THE BLUES
After a narrow loss at the hands of St. Bedes down at Brindisi Street, the Under’s ventured to the Varsity to play Uni Blues on the main oval. The Xavs started well with Biddlecombe, Tiernan, Vlahos & Barry all getting dangerous in the forward line and if it wasn’t for some wayward kicking then the quarter time margin could’ve been much more. Unfortunately, we lost 3 players to injury and were down to 1 on the bench after just 15 mins in the 1st quarter.
After the first break, the claret ‘n’ stout applied severe pressure in the 2nd quarter and the tackling was sensational. Battling against a small wind, the boys managed to kick 3 into the wind and extended their lead to 26 points, however Uni pulled one back just before the main break and the margin was cut back to 20 points. This was due to some classy forward line work from Tristan Parker. Luke Bisset was again finding space on the wing and Tom McClusky as the lone ruckmen seemed to be ferocious at the majority of contests.
The start of the third quarter saw Uni Blues dominate the contested possession and control the stoppages. They kicked the first 3 of the quarter and pulled the lead back to within 2 points. Uni managed to kick 4-1 for the quarter and on the flipside we kick terribly for 1-4. Nick Meehan and Will Moloney in an undermanned defence were both very serviceable.
Uni again, jumped out of the block in the 4th quarter and ended up taking the lead very early on. Not taking our chances came back to haunt us. The boys did rally very well though and never gave up, and if it weren’t for a couple of different moments in the game then the result could’ve been very different.
Now, the Under 19 Premier side will take on Old Melbournians in a crunch game at Stradbroke Park this coming Saturday. Any possible support will be much appreciated.
