Pre-season Pays Off for Under 19s
Old Xaverians: 17 – 18 – 120 def. Uni Blacks: 5 – 10 – 40 The Under 19 Premier side got off to a great start on Saturday against University Blacks. The Red & Black brigade started well, with Brendan Goss jumping out of the blocks to slot home 3 first quarter goals. This was also helped by the midfield brigade led by Harangozo, Curtain and Tiernan who all consistently won the hard ball. Jack Amad showed why he has a reputation for winning the hard ball, coming straight off the bench and running back into a pack. He then followed this up with two tackles and a smother. This set the tone for the day. The 2nd quarter was much of the same as the Xavs really took a stranglehold on the match. The back 6 who were sensational kept Uni scoreless even though they had just as many inside 50’s. The new look backline of Moloney, Maas, O’Sullivan, Plant, Franklyn and Torr ran and created plenty of chances for the forwards all day. Dom Walker was gaining more control of the ruck and Tom McClusky, the new captain, straightened up and slotted home in very cool fashion. Blacks came out after half time and threw everything at a ferocious Xavs opponent, but the claret and stout still managed to win the quarter and signs were looking good going into the last break. Xavs kicked away in the last quarter, which was a credit to the team as they didn’t take their foot of the pedal. After a long pre-season, it was god to see the boys get there just reward. With Uni Blacks and a great result behind us, ‘The Young Guns’ move on to playing Beaumaris at Stradbroke Park @ 2pm.
