BACK ON TOP
The Menages bounced back with a solid win against the old enemy, Scotch, at Stradbroke on the weekend and now remain secure in the top 2.
In difficult conditions, Scotch were competitive early on and it seemed that we were in for a tight contest but as the game wore on, the Ménages were simply too committed, too strong and too good for an ultimately disappointing Scotch outfit.
Patty Purcell, again, led from the front and showed why he is Captain of this side. Patty knows no other way but to put his head over the ball. The skipper was brave, tough as nails, copped plenty of hits but just kept going, leading his team to a win.
Dan Molan and James Morton, both back from the two’s this week, proved to be very valuable inclusions. Dan straightened up our forward line and kicked 4 goals in a Dimattina BOG performance, whilst Morto gave the onballers first use all day with his deft tap-outs and also took some telling grabs around the ground. Jack Davies also continued his good form in his second game for the Menages, until being cut down with an ankle injury late in the game.
Liam Grigg was at his classy best as he continually cut a swathe through the stoppages whilst the dependable Anthony Torre ran all day and was rock solid around the packs.
Jed McDonnell showed his versatility with a good performance as a supporting role in the ruck and Matt Altis, in a strong performance at full forward, also kicked 4 goals. Julian Moylan was again reliable down back and Tim Trahair, playing as a defensive wingman, was good all day.
But whilst the win was commendable, there is still a lot of improvement to be made as we fast approach the pointy end of the season. The endeavour has been consistently good all season, but occasional lapses in concentration, consistent poor decision making and skill execution remain our achilles heel and potentially will hurt us against better sides. Fortunately we still have three weeks left to work hard and improve in these areas before our first final.
