Ménages Set the Scene in Early Morning Victory
The Ménages went to Harry Trott Oval in the early hours of Saturday morning to kick of the OXFC Season 2010. The early start did not worry the away side, who quickly got into action after watching the unfurling of Collegians' 2009 Premiership Flag. Once official proceedings were over, the 3s were challenged early by the reigning premiers who made the early breakthrough. The Ménages responded immediately and began to assert some authority over their opposition.
The contest was fierce at times, but there was always an underlying feeling that the Ménages were in control. There were some aesthetically pleasing passages of play that saw the footy move from one end to the other without Collegians touching it. At times, the delivery into the Xavs forward 50 was pinpoint and the tall forwards in Lynchey and Henno went about their business of clunking them and converting.
The midfield was tough and uncompromising, led by the new skipper Patty Purcell who was assisted by the big man Trovato. Trev's game was excellent and was rewarded with a voucher from the always supportive Dimattina's. As the game wore on, the older and slower bodies of the Collegians stopped running and the Ménages just kept grinding away. Dan Molan provided great dash from the last line, James Glen used the ball beautifully off half back and Faithful was given the job in the last half to stop the always dangerous Collegians tall backs who continued to zone off. Faceball didn't disappoint, nullifying his opponent and slotting home one for himself.
By games end, the Ménages posted a 45 point win. The margin could have been significantly more had our kicking been more accurate and if a few majors were posted in the last (shortened) quarter.
All in all, the day was a great success for the Ménage's first outing of 2010. A win is all you can ask for in Round 1 and to do it with such authority has surely sent a message to the newly formed Premier Thirds competition. The next few weeks will see the shaping of the team with an overwhelming number of quality players to be introduced. The players have shown great patience and will continue to work hard to earn a spot in this team. It is a long season and a Round 1 win is a great platform from which this group can springboard and improve going forward. Well done Ménages.
