Finish Regular Season Well
Our final home and away game for the 2011 season was played at Stradbroke Park against Old Brighton.
The visitors had played solidly at their ground earlier in the year and were keen to finish off their season strongly.
They led late in the opening quarter having had the best of the clearances and a strong and vigorous attack on the ball. Dan Fulton had come in to replace the injured Tom McLuskey and took one of the marks of the year late in the quarter to propel OX to a narrow quarter time lead.
Our second quarter was better but we were still playing at nowhere near the strong level of recent weeks. Molony and Maas were marshalling the defence with Pane, Follachio, Hodgman and Wilson all good contributors. Davies and O’Flaherty were proving to be good targets and our lead had built to almost five goals by the long break.
Franklyn was doing well in the ruck but we were not dominating the clearances so many attacks were having to be built from defence. Fulton continued his impressive form with Mighell and Zito both contributing well along with Campbell and Prowse.
The team was challenged at the final break to push the score to 20 goals (needing 7) and our final quarter was a great lead-in to the upcoming finals series. All players took it up a level and Old Brighton never gave in ensuring a good test prior to the first semi final.
Maas snuck down the ground to kick a rare goal and Green finished off with a nice major also … Marek and Conor need to find their accuracy but both looked dangerous in our forward line.
We now move to the cut-throat finals series and on the bigger grounds, I am hopeful our game plan stands up.
If all players commit them selves strongly to the month ahead, we will certainly take some beating …
GOOD LUCK TO ALL !!
