RAIN SUPREME

Round:
9
Team:
Seniors
Opposition:
Old Melburnians
Final Score:
Old Xavs:15-12-102 OM's: 7-4-46

The seniors ran out out 56 point winners on a wet winter’s day at the Roche Oval at Xavier College.

From all at Old Xavs, thank you to the school for hosting us again in what is one of the highlights of the season for the Club.

The boys jumped out of the blocks with goals early goals to C Smith and then Agius and Rush early. C Smith's class was on show with 3 first quarter goals to burst the game open for a 6 goal to zero lead at quarter time.

The Purss/Shaw combination was dominating in the ruck and Darvell and Colbert were dominating in the middle. They were joined by Mercuri in Ball's absence and he was just sensational all day.

OM's fought their way back into the game in the second with a tougher and speedier style of play than in the first and the lead was only twenty points at half time.

Some genuine class goals from Mercuri in the third put the game beyond doubt as the rain tumbled down.

With Fleming and Clarke watching on from the Harris Freer Hardwick Fleming Toyota Kluger on the hill whilst nailing a few cans, they thought back on their retirements and felt they had made the right call....as Ball ran water in the torrential rain in front of them.

The last quarter saw Stean jag his second goal in a great 4 quarter performance and Mercuri continue his dominance with a sensational half ground soccer style run.

The back 6 were again sensational and unified. Colbert, Darvell and the rucks were fantastic all day and Gidley and Prowse on the wings were also solid. Larkins embraced his return to senior football in Wynne's absence and the crowd favourite Walga jagged 10 stats in the last quarter to show he has plenty of senior football ahead of him.

A 56 point win in those conditions serves us very well on the percentage front and leaves us at 7:2 at the half way mark -  a solid foundation upon which to build in the back half of the year, with some crucial games in the coming weeks that the lads must now set themselves for.

Enjoy the week off and good luck to all of those representing the Big V on the long weekend.
