WIN IN TOUGH CONDITIONS
The boys had a different look in their eye last Saturday and came out firing, kicking the first 4 goals of the game against a committed Collegians outfit. Andrew Oswald started the game well with two early goals and set the scene for a dominant first quarter. James Glen is relishing his newly found position in the backhalf and gave plenty of run all day, delivering deep into the forward line on numerous occassions. David "Becks" Stean was fresh and raring to go after a few weeks on the sidelines and the elder statesman showed the forward pressure required that makes good sides win these type of games.
Nick Bye dominated the centre and gave his cohorts plenty of ball, in particular Chris Santalucia and Matt Walsh. Collegians scored a late goal but the lads had set the tone of the game and wanted to increase the efforts in the second.
So the second quarter started and we had plenty of the ball through Josh Douglas, Dan Higgins, Brent Coburn and Pete Ryan down back. Cobe's found himself in a pickle a couple of times deep in the back half, but dashed through opponents with ease and created for Tim O'Meara on the far wing who is showing a couple of weeks on the sidelines served the boy well.
Unfortunately for the red and blacks, we just couldn't get the ball through the big sticks for the best part of term 2, except Dragon, who marked and goaled accordingly. Coming into the half, we had a handy two goal lead in quite tough heavy conditions.
The coaches asked the boys for more consistency and patience going into the third quarter, which was taken on board. With the ball getting heavier by the minute and the delivery not to the standard it should be, we had countless opportunities for the best part of the quarter. Then enter the small forwards in Pasceri, Molan and Stean who all got on the board and extended the lead, whilst Captain Skidmore again put his body on the line and welcomed his opponent into and out of the third quarter.
The last quarter was time to put the purple and golds away and the message was simple - "Put your body on the line and be efficient with your disposals". And the message was adhered to with a 4 goal quarter and slammed Collegians out of the game. James Ulbrick was a defensive demon with countless punches from behind and plenty of the old 1%ers, with Matt Skidmore, Liam Ginnivan and Tim Agius running as hard late as they did early in the game.
Good team effort boys, well done.
