SNAP THE TWO BLUES
Coming off 3 tight games the Crocs were expecting another hard fought encounter against their old rivals Prahran. What eventuated was a one sided affair as a 17 man Prahran, who have been hit hard with injuries, fought grimly but were overrun by a polished Crocs performance.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The game started as expected with a tight first quarter. Prahran scrapped effectively and although the Crocs controlled most of the ball they went to the first break with only a 2 goal to 1 ascendency courtesy of 2 strong mark and goals from spearhead Quinn. Coming off 9 goals the previous week, Quinn was full of confidence, and like a prized fighter he stood alone, distancing himself from the quarter time huddle, contemplating the prospect of a double figure return against a weakened foe. Unfortunately early in the second quarter the sharpshooter lost his focus running head first in to a Prahran elbow, breaking his nose, further denting his already slim chances with the fairer sex. Craig Marsh replaced the unlucky Quinn in the forward line and from there it was all one way traffic. The Crocs defensive pressure improved all over the ground, especially in the forward half, and the result was a nine goal to nil quarter. Matt Callery in his green socks debut, Anthony Favaloro and Craig Marsh were significant contributors as the Crocs set up a match winning lead.
With a 10 goal break at the half, special guest coach Hall asked his players to maintain their intensity in the face of the worsening weather. The Crocs controlled the ball again in the third stanza with the back line working very effectively especially Willy Ireland who has been supreme as the key last line player all season. With the Garlic Naan (Nick Hulett) mopping up very effectively on the wing, and the aggressive back pocket Nick Silk providing plenty of run the Crocs went in to three quarter time with a 100 point break.
3 points of interest remained for the season low crowd watching on, i) with the mercury dropping below the freezing mark, would anyone leave the field with hypothermia, ii) as special guest coach Large moved him to the forward pocket, would Ryan Pedler, a 4 season Crocodile, kick his first ever goal in the green socks, iii) would either of the spring healed Crocodile ruckmen win a hit out against the Natanui like Prahran big man. Fortunately in the first instance, and sadly in the other two, the answer on all counts was no
Crocs ran out 18 goal winners and sit atop the table at the half way mark of the season. Many challenges lie ahead.
