NINE FOR NOODLE
The Crocs recorded their best win of the year over the impressive OM’s outfit to the tune of 16 points, led by a nine goal haul by Nick ‘Gene Wilder’ Quinn.
After two tough encounters in the previous weeks, the Diles were battle hardened and had been building up for this top of the table clash and did not disappoint. Our ability to work hard for each other around the contest and constant tackling pressure created numerous opportunities for our forwards and they set the standard for the day. The conditions were slippery at the start and so was Quinny, who was able to get away from his man on the lead and was solid in the air and got the boys on the scoreboard early. Our backline was once again outstanding with Nick Silk continuing his great form taking control of the defence, ably supported by Will Ireland and Nick Larkins. Tim ‘Big Dog’ Roache was excellent early, however in pursuit of a loose ball his hamstring twanged and he was done for the day. Luke Pattison was pushed into defence and showed his versatility by playing a crucial role down back. Tommy Fitzgerald also made the move from forward to defender and took to it like a duck to water and his damaging field kicking would prove vitally important in setting up transition play.
The Diles were out to an early lead after the first change, however OM’s hit back with the wind and were able to get a few goals on the board and took a nine point advantage at the long break. The mood in the Xav’s room was positive, knowing that we had plenty left in the tank and that a few questionable umpiring decisions had played into their favour. A committed, one on one effort was asked for and was received. Quinny again came to life and had another three goals on the board in quick time. Our midfield was gaining the ascendency around the stoppages with our ruck men, Duncan Parry and Dave Rees giving them great service, combined with their ability to win contested ball with Fergus Browne, Craig Marsh, Tommy Byrne and Anthony Favaloro able to release our damaging ball users in Nick Corcoran and Andy Jones, the Crocs were on a roll and kicked six for the quarter to take back a 19 point lead at the last change.
The equation was simple, win the last quarter and we win the game. The Diles were urged to attack and resisted the temptation to go into our shell and protect our lead with defensive tactics. The first ten minutes were ferocious from both sides with neither team relenting. OM’s were able to get back into the game and closed to within 6 points before the Crocs again countered with some great defensive work in our forward 50 and slammed on another three goals to put the result beyond doubt. Quinny finished the day on nine goals straight, kicking them from all over the park, a match-winning effort. Andy Barrett again led from the front and has been a model of consistency this season. The team is starting to develop a great culture, with the load being spread well amongst the team and with a few key players to return the future is looking bright for the Crocodiles in 2010. We come up against traditional Club XVIII rival Prahran this week and after setting the benchmark this week in terms of our effort and style of play it is important that we continue to improve as individuals and as a group.
