  • Where Are They Now? - Adam Sassi

Jock O'Keefe track down one of the OXFC favourite sons Adam Sassi.

67 Adam Sassi (pictured left) must have one of the most impressive footy CV's in the OXFC family. When he left Xavier, Adam played for Fitzroy U19's in 1991 but failed to make the cut when the club moved to Brisbane and was rebadged as Brisbane Bears. He also missed the opportunity to party with Pixie and Christopher Skase. Adam selected Old Xavs as his team of choice and from 1992 it was onwards and upwards.

  • Where Are They Now? - Peter 'China' O'Brien

Way back when in 1973 the Old Xavs played and trained at their home ground at Como Park, South Yarra. Amongst those running around the track was Peter O'Brien who also answered to 'China'. He played 50 games, or more with the Reserves in C grade plus a couple of games in the seniors.

China went onto captain the Reserves in 1974.

“Our arch enemies in the Reserves were St Kevins and I still carry the battle scars of a biffo with a St Kev's player”. By coincidence the offending Skevies player turned up at the O'Brien household that same night to date China's sister. No surprises here, the courtship fizzled out. The lesson learnt, is don't mess with our China!

“My fondest memories of the OXFC were the friendships I established with a great bunch of blokes”, recounted China.

  • 150 Games for James 'Malla' McDonnell

63 One of the Old Xaverians Football Clubs’ favourite sons, James McDonnell, played his 150th game in the Red & Black last weekend against Old Haileybury.

Affectionately known around the Club as Malla or Big Jimmy Bear, a relatively svelte James first came to the Club in 2000 straight from the School, and quickly made an impact by winning the U19 competition goal kicking award with 72 goals. He repeated this feat in the U19’s Premiership year of 2001 with 68 goals (including a 16 goal haul against ‘The Clock’ from Mazenod), which was made all the more impressive given he played quite a few games in the Seniors that year.

  • Where Are They Now? - Kev Breheny

Big Kevin Breheny was a stalwart of the club in the late sixties through to the mid seventies.

Kev played most of his games in the mighty Reserves as a ruckman and racked up a total of 100 games, or more. He also served as club Secretary, 1973 -74 under the Presidency of Jack Bowen, then Brian Lugar.

Soon after hanging up his boots Kev moved to Sydney and to this day he now calls the Harbourside city home. After a working lifetime in stockbroking, investment, banking and commercial real estate he is a Director and founder of Sydney based Property Australia Group. Over the years he has been a great contributor with help and advice at the annual Maytime Fair - Sydney style.

After twenty years in Sydney, Kev has not been converted to rugby and being an Old Xav is yet another staunch supporter of the Sydney Swans.
